Christmas Fayre was one of my first original Christmas songs that I recorded
in quite a while. The title came to me during a trip I took to England just
before Thanksgiving in 1999. While riding to a party with some friends, we came
upon a junction in the road with a directional sign painted, "Christmas Fayre".
Always one to use "olde English" words as Christmas song titles, I knew which
song and Christmas CD those words belonged to.
The actual song contains a group of ostinato bells and choir pads with a
rolling synth pop bass line. The lead line comes from a set of church bells and
the rest of the song rounds itself out with a grooving percussion track. It
reminds me of a dark and clear, star filled night just days before Christmas,
where the bite of the cold wind hints at the coming of snow. |

| This starts as a traditional cover with classical instruments; horns,
woodwinds, bells. Then electronic bass and dramatic drums lay foundation for a
violin solo. The music escalates into a super drama with horns and violin
playing the central melody canon style. More synthetica is introduced to add
edge until it peaks and shifts to the latter part of "We Three Kings". Acoustic
guitar opens while piano plays counter melodies. It all wraps up on a happy
note! |

This track started out quite a bit differently than the final outcome.
Originally done as a dance tune, I took a more traditional role with a
minimalist choice of drums, base, choir sounds, and pianos.
The song starts with a base line from the original classic, but I swapped out
the standard chord changes with a more cascading choir set of voicings. With a
bit of live drums and somewhat liberal melody changes, I continued with some
synth and piano solos, finishing up with a very classic sounding church organ
ending. |

| Carol of the Bells starts as a straight cover, then quickly spins off into a
more original composition. While the piece moves further and further away from
the original Carol of the Bells, it still maintains some sense of the
reoccurring theme. The last minute or so of music is really just an extended
solo so to speak. It was fun and sounded okay so I kept it in, backing with some
strings and horns. |

Santa is a mix I recorded of a jazzy arrangement done by some Internet
composers. With a convincing sax lead followed up by some outstanding piano
chops and a bass solo, "Santa" should remain a staple in your Christmas music
favorites. |
